UPDATED – According to BuzzFeed‘s John Paczkowski, Apple has a next-gen Thunderbolt Display in development, with an integrated GPU.

Apple has confirmed that it is discontinuing its Thunderbolt Display, which first debuted in 2011 and hasn’t received an update since then.
“We’re discontinuing the Apple Thunderbolt Display. It will be available through Apple.com, Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers while supplies last. There are a number of great third-party options available for Mac users,” said an Apple spokesperson in a statement given to TechCrunch.
Apple will continue to sell the Thunderbolt Display while supplies last, but once they’re gone, they are gone, as production is ending. The Apple spokesman didn’t go into detail as to why Apple finally announced the death of the display, and whether or not this means a new 4K or 5K display could be in the works.
In the wake of stock shortages during the last month or so, there was speculation that the Cupertino firm might be planning to debut a new display this month at WWDC 2016, which was held last week, but no such announcement occurred.
New Display Rumored to be in the Works
A number of rumors have suggested a new 5K display is in the works, with a resolution of 5120 x 2880 pixels, and connections for USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 peripherals. Some rumors indicate such a display could boast its own built-in GPU.
Those in the market for a new display may want to move quickly to grab one of the remaining Thunderbolt Displays, or if you’re the gambling type, maybe you’ll wait until Apple announces a much-rumored MacBook Pro lineup. That would be the perfect time to also debut any new display Apple might have in the works. Apple is widely expected to announce new MacBook Pros sometime in the fall.
