Spotify has lowered the price on its Premium for Family subscription to $14.99 per month. The price cuts the price of a family membership in half, plus it adds one more member to the plan. The plan now directly matches Apple Music’s six member family plan.
The Verge notes that the previous Spotify family plan ran $30 per month for five members. Current Spotify Premium for Family subscribers won’t have to do anything, they’ll automatically be moved to the new pricing. All members of the family plan get their own account, with their own playlists and music recommendations. The new plan rolls out internationally today, expect for Canada.
While Spotify remains the leader in the subscription music market, Apple Music has made inroads, adding a million users a month in the February to April timespan. Today’s announcement could indicate Spotify is beginning to feel the heat, and reacted accordingly. Google Play made a similar announcement, matching Apple’s price, back in December.
Spotify announced earlier this month that the launch of Apple Music had actually led to increased subscriber growth for its service, with 30 million subscribers compared to the 20 million it had when Apple Music launched in June 2015.
Apple earlier this month announced Apple Music will now offer a $4.99 per month subscription to students enrolled at an eligible educational institution. That’s a 50% discount off the usual $9.99 per month single user subscription fee.
The new membership is available to both new and existing subscribers, who can either sign up or change their membership from the web or the Apple Music mobile application on iOS and Android devices.
