A report on Wednesday claims Apple will debut iPhones with OLED displays a year earlier than expected. Nikkei (via AppleInsider) reports Apple will offer an iPhone using an OLED screen in 2017.
According to sources familiar with Apple’s business dealings, the company contacted LG and Samsung about possibly ramping up OLED production for 2017. It is likely, however, that use of the new display would be limited to a high-end model of the iPhone, such as an “iPhone 7s Plus” due to projected supply constraints.
While it was expected that Apple would hold off until flexible OLEDs were available for use as curved displays in a future iPhone, Apple may be looking to use the more advanced displays earlier than expected, in hopes of reinvigorating iPhone sales, which a number of analysts expect to begin to slide a bit.
As is usual, today’s report must be taken with a grain of your favorite low-sodium salt substitute, as the usually reliable KGI Securities analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo earlier claimed that Apple would not debut an iPhone with an OLED display until at least 2019. However, stalling iPhone sales could have forced Apple to expedite its plans. Stay tuned.
