Google has announced that it is reducing the price of its $149 Nik Collection of photography tools down to a low, low price of FREE. The suite of seven desktop plug-ins for advanced photographers was acquired by Google when they bought German developer Nik, in order to grab its mobile editing app, Snapseed.
That’s the good news, the bad news is that the Nik Collection likely will not be updated in the future. Google basically says as much with this piece of their announcement:
As we continue to focus our long-term investments in building incredible photo editing tools for mobile, including Google Photos and Snapseed, we’ve decided to make the Nik Collection desktop suite available for free, so that now anyone can use it.
The Nik Collection includes seven plug-ins: Analog Efex Pro, Color Efex Pro, Silver Efex Pro, Viveza, HDR Efex Pro, Sharpener Pro, and Dfine. All of the plug-ins work in Photoshop, Lightroom, and Aperture. Mac and PC versions are available for download here.
If you purchased the collection for $149 anytime during 2016, Google will refund your payment automatically, “in the coming days.”
