Apple on Monday release tvOS 9.2 for the fourth-generation Apple TV. The update brings some welcome new features to the set top box, including folders, Bluetooth keyboard compatibility, Siri Remote dictation support, and more. Fourth-generation Apple TV users can download the new version over-the-air by going to “Settings” -> “Software Update.”
tvOS fixes one particularly frustrating aspect of previous versions, that of entering search terms or logins and passwords via the Remote. Version 9.2 now offers compatibility with Bluetooth keyboards, and dictation support. Users can now enter text via a Bluetooth keyboard or via dictation support with the Siri Remote. This includes the ability to spell usernames and passwords via dictation.
In tvOS 9.2, apps can now be grouped into folders, making it much more like iOS in that aspect, allowing a more organized Home Screen, allowing for easier app categorization. The App Switcher also gets a new look.
Full support for iCloud Photo Library is now included, allowing Apple TV users to access all of their photos on their streaming box. The new feature also supports Live Photos. iCloud Photo Library will need to be turned on via the Settings app.
Siri’s search capabilities are greatly improved under tvOS 9.2. Siri can now search for specific apps, or categories of apps.
Note: After installing the 9.2 update, users will be prompted to update the firmware of their Siri Remote. The update will offer improved motion sensor performance in apps.
tvOS also offers support for MapKit, allowing developers to offer maps in their tvOS apps, and also offers support for additional languages.
