One of the announcements that flew under the radar on Monday was Apple’s release of a Lightning to USB-C cable, which will make it easier for owners of 12-inch MacBooks to sync/charge their iOS devices.
The new cable is available in 1-meter and 2-meter lengths, and connects any Lightning-compatible device to a computer’s USB-C port. The 12-inch MacBook is the Apple laptop that comes to mind fitting that description, and until now, owners of that ultra-light notebook were forced to buy an adapter, or fulfill their device’s charging needs elsewhere.
The USB-C cable offers 12.9-inch iPad Pro users the opportunity to take advantage of their über-device’s fast-charge feature. The tablet’s USB 3 compatibility allows the device to charge at a much faster 29-watts, compared to the usual 12-watts supplied by the adapter that ships in the Pro’s box.
Sadly, buyers of the new 9.7-inch iPad Pro will be limited to the standard 12-watts, as Apple in its infinite wisdom, did not see fit to give the new tablet USB 3 capabilities. However, the smaller Pro also has a smaller battery, so…
The Apple Lightning to USB-C Cable is $25 for the 1 meter (3 foot) length model, and the 2 meter (6 foot) model is $35.
