American Apparel to Soon Accept Apple Pay in U.S. Stores

Clothing retailer American Apparel is upgrading its point-of-sale terminals, and with the move will come support for Apple Pay, Android Pay, and all those other NFC-based “Pay” systems. The new terminals – which are being installed by Index – will offer point-to-point encryption (P2PE) and EMV for Chip-and-Signature or Chip-and-PIN cards.

MacRumors:

American Apparel, based in Los Angeles, California, is a popular wholesale provider of basic t-shirts and other clothing. As of September 2015, the company operated 227 retail stores in 19 countries, although many of its sales occur online. The retailer exited Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February 2016 with an approved restructuring plan.

American Apparel is just the latest in a list of U.S. retailers and restaurants that have either begun accepting Apple Pay, or have announced that they will soon accept Apple’s touchless payments system, including: Crate & Barrel, Chick-fil-A, Au Bon Pain, Cinnabon, Chili’s, Domino’s, KFC, and Starbucks.

Apple Pay’s recent expansion to China brings the number of retail locations to 2 million, located in the U.S., the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and China.

Apple is scheduled to launch Apple Pay in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Spain this year in partnership with American Express. Earlier this week, it was leaked that MasterCard plans to support the payments system in Canada, Brazil, Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore in 2016.
