Apple Launches Repair Extension Program to Fix Mac Pro Video Issues

An internal notice indicates Apple has launched a new Repair Extension Program to address the video issues reported by many users of late 2013 Mac Pro models.

MacRumors:

Apple has determined that graphics cards in some late 2013 Mac Pros, manufactured between February 8, 2015 and April 11, 2015, may cause distorted video, no video, system instability, freezing, restarts, shut downs, or may prevent system start up.

Owners of affected Mac Pro models can get repairs made by Apple, or an Apple Authorized Service Provider free of charge until May 30, 2018. Apple says it will take 3-5 days to make the repairs.

Apple says it will replace both video cards on affected Mac Pros. AMD’s FirePro D500 and D700 GPUs are affected. AMD’s FirePro D300 GPU on the base Mac Pro is not listed in the communication.

Customers are encouraged to book an appointment with the Apple retail store Genius Bar, or to visit an Apple Authorized Service Provider to determine if their Pro is eligible for the service program. At this point, we don’t know if Apple will publicly announce the program to customers. A similar program, which ends February 27, 2016, was launched to fix 2011-2013 MacBook pro models with video issues, back in February of 2015.

It isn’t known how many Mac Pro models with the issue have been sold. However, a lengthy Apple Support Communities topic concerning the Mac Pro video issues was posted in February of last year, and since then over 3,500 views and 50 replies have been tallied.
