A new report from Digitimes, (they of the iffy reliability record), claims Apple’s expected update to the iPad Air lineup, the iPad Air 3, will boast a 4K screen, 4GB of RAM, and improved battery life. As is usual for reports from Digittimes, they cite the ever popular “unnamed supply chain sources” for their information.
This is an iffy rumor for many reasons, not the least of which is a 4K screen would give the iPad Air a higher resolution screen than the iPad Pro, unless they’re planning a quick update to the iPad Pro with a 5K screen, which isn’t going to happen in the next few months.
Apple also doesn’t usually choose battery life over slimness for its iPads, so unless there’s been an advance in battery technology, or a way to squeeze more out of the already acceptable battery life, well…
Earlier rumors have indicated the possibility of a rear-facing flash, and a speaker setup similar to that of the iPad Pro. Unfortunately, we haven’t heard any reliable indications that Apple might add Apple Pencil compatibility to the iPad Air 3, or even a feature connector like is found on their über tablet. Those would be welcome additions in our humble opinion.
As reported by 9to5Mac earlier this week, the iPad Air 3 is expected to be unveiled at a March media event, alongside a new 4-inch iPhone 5se/6c, as well as new bands for the Apple Watch. We’ll see then which rumors are correct about Apple’s third-generation iPad Air.
