If you’re one of those folks who worry the Wi-Fi Assist feature in iOS 9 might be eating up your precious cellular data, you’ll be glad to know the iOS 9.3 beta offers a new way to help you track how much cellular data the feature has used.
Introduced with the debut of iOS 9, Wi-Fi Assist allows an iPhone to seamlessly switch over to a cellular data signal if a local Wi-Fi signal is weak. The feature was enabled automatically when a device was updated to iOS 9, and has resulted in claims of users unknowingly going through a large amount of cellular data, running up large bills.
Data usage for the Wi-Fi Assist feature can be checked by going into “Settings” and tapping the “Cellular” menu option. Scroll down to the bottom of the Cellular menu, and you’ll see the “Wi-Fi Assist toggle switch. (If it’s green, the feature is enabled.) You’ll now see a data usage number just just under the “Wi-Fi Assist” label, as seen above. That number shows how much cellular data has been used by the feature.
Users concerns about the feature led Apple to publish a support document about it, explaining in more detail how the feature works. Despite the reassurances, there has been a $5 million class-action lawsuit filed, with plaintiffs claiming they forced to pay overage charges on their phones after updating to iOS 9.
