Today’s tvOS 9.1 update for the fourth-generation Apple TV reportedly enables a feature that many users have been longing for. The iOS Remote app now works with the new streaming box, allowing iPhone and iPad users to control their new Apple TV with the iOS device.
While the Siri Remote that is included with the new Apple TV mimicked many of the gestures available in the iOS Remote app, many users, (this writer included), were disappointed that the app we had used for years with second and third-generation Apple TVs no longer worked.
A feature users especially missed was the ability to enter text via the Remote app in place of the irritatingly slow method of entering text via the on screen keyboard and the Siri Remote. Text entry will be much faster for users of the Remote app. AppleInsider reports that the Remote app on the Apple Watch also works now.
No update is required for the iOS Remote app, but users will need to update their Apple streaming box to tvOS 9.1, released earlier today. If you don’t have the Remote app installed on your iOS device, you can download it here.
