While there are many charging docks on the market, they are usually designed for just one brand of device. Many users own both iOS and Android devices. (Believe it or not!)
Overview
The HeroDock from CableJive is one of the first universal docks I’ve seen on the market. The dock uses your own cable, making it fully adaptable, allowing use with Lightning, Micro-USB, and USB-C cables. It is also fully adjustable, allowing use with any device, with, or without a case.
The HeroDock is unassembled, so you’ll likely want to be fairly handy, or at least good with puzzles. However, I am neither, (and hate directions), and I was still able to get the HeroDock put together, and ready to charge within 10 minutes. (The video below shows what’s involved in the assembly.)
The HeroDock is made of aluminum, making it sturdy, yet light. As I mentioned before, this dock is BYOC (Bring Your Own Cable), so make sure you have an extra cable handy. The package includes easy to follow, IKEA-like instructions with plenty of drawings, so it’s easy to figure out how to assemble the pieces.
Once I got it together, I found the HeroDock to be a good looking dock, one which allowed me to charge my iPhone, while still having access to the headphone port. (The HeroDock includes a small hook and tray on the back of the dock to allow storage of earbuds, or even loose change, if that’s how you roll.)
The HeroDock also includes an adjustable back support, allowing docking of devices that are encased in a highly protective case, or no case at all. The back support slides back and forth, and can be locked in place for the perfect fit. The rubber back plate offers nice support for larger devices. (CableJive says you can use it for tablets, such as the iPad, but I’m not sure I would try to balance an iPad Pro on this thing.)
The metal base includes micro-suction strips on the bottom, to secure the dock to avoid it sliding all over a desk or table. While it sticks nicely to any smooth surface, it can be easily removed without any fear of taking the finish off of your desk.
Verdict
I found the HeroDock to be an excellent dock, which worked with every device I own. While the price may seem a bit high, the dock is made of high quality materials, and looks as if it will give many years of use. The design would fit in to almost any setting, looking especially nice in an office. (Holiday gift idea! HINT! HINT!)
