Apple earlier this week posted an update to its developer webpage with a pie chart showing that iOS 8, the mobile operating system that become obsolete today, is on 87% of compatible iOS devices.
The chart also shows iOS 7 is running on 11% of devices, while earlier versions of iOS hold a 2% share. The data is drawn from App Store visits on September 14th. Barring any unforeseen difficulties, Apple should release its latest mobile operating system, iOS 9, sometime around mid-day today, Wednesday September 16th.
This time last year, when iOS 8 was about to debut, adoption of iOS 7 sat at three points higher than iOS 8 does today.
iOS 9 is due for release today, and brings a number of enhancements, including a remodeled user interface, a new News app, improved Siri functionality, multi-tasking on some models of the iPad, and an improved Maps app with Transit information included.
