A report today from 9to5Mac claims the next-generation Apple TV, likely to debut on September 9th alongside the next-generation iPhone, will be priced below $200, and should be on shelves as early as October.
According to sources, the fourth-generation Apple TV will be priced below $200, and is on track to become available in October. Apple executives are apparently still finalizing the price of the revamped living room device, but the latest options call for a starting price point of either $149 or $199, both higher than the third-generation Apple TV…
While the fourth-generation Apple TV will be priced at a premium compared to both the current-generation Apple TV, and competitor’s set-top boxes, Apple plans to keep the current-generation Apple TV on the shelves at its current $69 price point as an entry-level option for consumers. The report says the new Apple TV will be similar to the current model in appearance, but will be thicker and slightly wider.
The next-generation Apple TV is expected to boast Siri support, a new touch-enable remote control, an App Store, imroved processor, and larger storage, as well as a revamped interface. Apple is also said to have plans to release a television streaming package for the device, priced as low as $40, which will offer a number of televisions channels, to compete with cable and satellite providers.
9to5Mac’s sources also tell them that a software update is planned for the third-generation Apple TV, which will support the television streaming package, but will not offer App Store, or Siri support.
