Facebook updated its Instagram apps for iOS and Android on Thursday, and it now allows posting of videos and photos in both landscape and portrait modes.
When choosing an existing photo or video to upload, Instagram users can now tap a format button to choose one of three dimensions. The full-sized content will then appear in feeds, although profile grids will still show images in cropped squares to preserve symmetry.
Previously, Instagram only allowed content to be posted if formatted in a square shape, often cropping the photos awkwardly. This was deliberate on Instagram’s part, as it was intended to be reminiscent of old film type cameras and the photos they produced.
The update also allows all filters to be used on both video and photos, previously, the app kept filters for the two types of content separate. When posting video, users can now scale the intensity of effects.
