Dr. Dre Announces iTunes/Apple Music Exclusive Album: ‘Compton: A Soundtrack’

The weekend saw Dr. Dre announce on his Beats 1 radio show “The Pharmacy,” that his new album, “Compton: A Soundtrack” will debut August 7, exclusively on Apple Music and iTunes.

The Apple-exclusivity announcement was made by Dr. Dre, alongside fellow musician and former band-mate Ice Cube, and director of Straight Outta Compton, F. Gary Gray. Although officially a soundtrack for the film — which chronicles the real-life story of Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy-E, and a few others, around the formation of legendary hip hop/rap group N.W.A. — “Compton A Soundtrack” is also Dr. Dre’s first album in over 15 years.

The album will include the following 16 tracks:

Dre became a member of the Apple “family” with the company’s spring 2014 acquisition of Beats. His profile at the company has continued to rise, lately due to his involvement in the launch of Apple Music, including his weekly Beats 1 radio show.

On the weekend show, Dre also explained why his much-anticipated, but never released album “Detox” never saw the light of day:

“I didn’t like it. It wasn’t good. The record, it just wasn’t good. … I worked my ass off on it, and I don’t think I did a good enough job.”
