If you’re on the lam from Johnny Law, and you get bored in your hotel room, don’t kill time by listening to music on Spotify, or binge watching the third season of House of Cards on Netflix.
Colorado authorities have closed a seven-month search for two girls who were abducted in December by their mother, Brittany Nunn, and her husband, Peter Barr, in the midst of a custody dispute. The case was ultimately cracked by local sheriff’s investigator Drew Weber, who executed a search warrant and pulled records from Nunn’s Spotify account, The Coloradoan newspaper reported.
Webber tracked the IP address associated with Nunn’s Spotify account to Mexico. He was also able to pull IP information from Nunn’s Netflix account, and tracked the fugitives to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. With cooperation by a private investigator, the FBI, and the US State Department, the abducted girls – ages 4 and 6 – were eventually brought back to the U.S.
Nunn, who was on the verge of losing custody of the girls to their fathers, was arrested by Mexican authorities along with Bare, and has been returned to the states, where they now face felony custody violation charges.
Neither Spotify or Netflix has commented on the investigation. Currently, neither company offers a Transparency Report that details requests from governments and law enforcement agencies for user information.
