Apple released beta 3 of iOS 9 on Wednesday, bringing a number of new features to the most recent test version of Apple’s venerable mobile operating system. The update adds the revamped Music app, which includes Apple Music, the long-awaited News app, a revamped two-factor authentication system, and several other tweaks and features.
Apple’s News app made its first appearance in iOS 9, offering a curated list of stories based on the user’s preferences and interests. The app includes various channels of content, and users can add RSS feeds from Safari. (Tap the “Share” icon, and then tap “Add to News” in the Share menu.) This feature appears to be U.S. only for the moment.
The iPad got some specific love in the update, gaining app folders that can display apps in a 4×4 grid, instead of the 3×3 layout of previous versions.
The updated Music app in iOS 9 now offers beta users access to Apple Music, Beats 1 Radio, and Apple Music Connect. Related: There is now an option in the “Music” menu under “Settings” that allows streaming of music at the highest quality when using a cellular connection.
The new iOS 9 beta now offers a revamped two-factor authentication system, which is said to be more streamlined.
When swiping downward to bring up search, Siri App Suggestions are now displayed.
The new beta now offers new folders for selfies and screenshots in the Photos app. “Selfies” holds all photos taken with the front-facing shooter, while “Screenshots” holds all screenshots taken of the device’s screen via the Power button/Home button combination.
The Restriction section of the Settings app now offers the option to toggle on/off the News app, and the option to turn off Apple Music Connect is no longer there.
We’ll keep an eye out for reports of any other changes in the latest beta of iOS 9, and will let you know right here what we learn.
