Apple CEO Tim Cook said on Tuesday that the company expects the Apple Watch to be a hot holiday gift item, and plans to expand retail availability of the Watch ahead of the holiday shopping season.
During Apple’s third quarter results call, Cook said Apple is preparing to expand the device’s channel availability, although he didn’t offer details about the expansion. “We’re convinced that the Watch is going to be one of the top gifts of the holiday season,” Cook said.
Cook noted that the Watch has has so far been available through only 680 points of sale. Cook’s comments indicate Apple could be adding more third-party retailers to the ranks. Currently the wearable is available only via Apple’s online store and retail stores, as well as a tiny amount of luxury fashion retailers.
Cook did not offer specific sales numbers for the Watch during Tuesday’s call, merely commenting that sell through “was higher than comparable sell through periods of original iPhone or original iPad,” and that sales had exceeded expectations.
