In an odd turn of events, knock-offs of Apple’s official Apple Watch charging cables are showing up on Amazon priced higher than the official cables that Apple offers!
… unlike the real cables, which Apple sells for $29 to $39, the knock-offs from companies such as “Reiko,” “Somoder” and “WL” are going for $45 to $58. The $58 version is shipping now with delivery this week, while the $45 ones promise to ship at various times directly from China.
The sellers are using Apple’s own official images to promote the knockoff’s, and some, like Reiko, call their version the “Data Cable for Apple Watch” even though the magnetic cables are capable only of charging, not transmitting data. Some of the ads show photos of Apple’s metal-clad Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Cable, while others include shots of the plastic model that is shipped with the Apple Watch Sport.
As a rule, sellers of knock-off Apple accessories have relied on much lower prices to draw buyers into their web. However, this go-round, it looks as if sellers are trying to trade on the fact that no official cables are as yet available on Amazon.
Do yourself a favor. If you need an extra Apple Watch Charging Cable, visit Apple.com or head out to your Apple Retail Store and pick up an official one. We’ll let you know if any certified third-party cables show up and are worth taking a look at.
