iOS, Android, Windows Skype Apps Hit By New Text-String Crash Bug (UPDATED: Fix Available)

UPDATE – Microsoft has released a patch for the text bug reported below. Microsoft say to download an update version of the app to fix the issue.

A text string bug, similar to the one that hit Apple’s iOS Messages app last week, has hit iOS, Android, and Windows versions of the Skype app. The text string that causes the crash is much more common, as it is “http://:”

On all of three of the versions of Skype, restarting the app loads the chat history, causing the app to crash again. The OS X version of Skype is not reportedly not affected by the bug.

At this point in time, there is no reported workaround on the iOS and Android versions of the app. Microsoft told VentureBeat, who first discovered the bug report in the Skype community forum, that it is aware of the issue and is working on a fix.

We’ll let you know when Microsoft either releases an update to fix the bug, or announces a workaround for it. Stay tuned.
