Intel has today unveiled its next-generation of quad-core Broadwell processors, suitable for both desktop and laptop computers. A trio of Core i7 chips – the i7-5950HQ, i7-5850HQ and i7-5750HQ – are positioned perfectly for the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro.
The new processors have base frequencies of between 2.5 GHz and 2.9 GHz and feature integrated Intel Iris Pro 6200 graphics.
The fifth-generation Broadwell chips are expected to hit shelves in the next 30-60 days. The first computers with the new processors should be available as early as July or August.
Apple refreshed their 15-inch Retina MacBook pro last month, however processor upgrades were not a part of the refresh. The laptops continue to make use of previous-generation Haswell chips.
Intel earlier today unveiled Thunderbolt 3 with USB-C compatibility. Thunderbolt 3 supports USB 3.1, and offers DisplayPort 1.2 support, and transfer speeds of up to 40Gbps.
