The upcoming Apple Watch watchOS 2 update gives developers access to a load of new abilities, not the least of which is to use your Watch as a motion controller for gaming on your Apple TV!
Rolocule Games is already testing a working version of an update for Bowling Central, one of its games designed with AirPlay streaming from an iPad or iPhone to your Apple TV-connected display, that lets you swing your arm (with Apple Watch attached) to provide lifelike bowling experiences.
Bowling Central already allows you to use an iPhone to control and roll your bowling ball on the Apple TV, but if you’re like me, you always worried that you might accidentally throw your phone through your television screen! Rolocule has fixed that by using the Watch, which is securely strapped to your wrist.
The original Apple Watch WatchKit SDK didn’t allow using the Watch as a motion controller, but the new watchOS 2 SDK opens up the Watch’s sensors to developers. The new features will become available to apps with the public release of watch OS 2 and iOS 9 in the fall.
Until then, you can still play the current version of Bowling Central, and if you don’t already own the game, you’ll be glad to know Rolocule is offering the game for free. It usually takes a $2.99 chunk out of your iTunes Store balance. And don’t forget, if you own an Apple TV, you can use your iPhone to control the game on your big screen television via AirPlay.
We can’t wait to see what developers will come up with for other new uses for the Apple Watch. Until then, we’ll see you at the lanes!
Bowling Central is available free for a short time. It is compatible with the iPhone and iPad, as well as allowing game play on the Apple TV via AirPlay. [GET IT HERE.]
