Apple is said to be working on a larger, 12.9-inch iPad that will feature a Bluetooth stylus with pressure sensitivity, Force Touch support, and a USB-C connector.
A person familiar with Apple’s future product plans has revealed that the company is in fact working on an all-new iPad with a larger 12.9-inch display. Commonly referred to amongst members of the media and enthusiasts as an “iPad Pro,” the timetable for release for this device is unknown, but a number of features entirely new to the iPad lineup are included.
AppleInsider’s source says the larger iPad will likely include a NFC radio, which would allow the larger “iPad Pro” to act as a Point of Sale terminal to accept payments with Apple Pay. NFC could laso allow for simpler pairing of accessories.
The source also noted the larger iPad will boast a new touchscreen with improved touch latency, to improve the experience when using the new pressure-sensitive Bluetooth stylus.
The larger tablet will also reportedly be able to sense pressure from users’ fingertips, as Apple will allegedly bring Force Touch input to the 12.9-inch behemoth.
Also mentioned by AppleInsider’s source was a USB-C port for the new tablet, although they didn’t confirm if the new port would replace the current lightning connector, or would be included as a second connectivity option. Leaked case designs said to be based on the “iPad Pro,” have indicated two port openings.
