We’ve reported previously that Apple is working on split-screen multitasking for the iPad, clues to the feature have even been found buried in iOS 8. Now a new report indicates Apple may be ready to release the feature as a part of iOS 9. Multi-user support could also be on the way.
9to5Mac reports that split-screen multitasking is on schedule to be included as part of iOS 9, due to debut at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference on June 8th. The multitasking feature will allow displaying two apps side-by-side, or can offer two views of the same app, such as viewing two documents in the same app at the same time. Apps can be viewed and arranged in multiple views, including 1/2, 1/3, and 2/3 of a screen.
Apple is developing a dual-app viewing mode, 12-inch iPads codenamed “J98″ and “J99,” as well as support for multi-user logins, according to sources briefed on the plans. First planned for debut last year, the split-screen applications feature for the iPad could be introduced as soon as June at Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference, while multi-user login support and the 12-inch iPads will apparently arrive later…
The site warns that while the multitasking feature is slated for iOS 9, it could be removed by the time the new mobile OS debuts at WWDC 2015.
Apple is also reported to be working on a much-requested feature, multi-user login support. The feature would allow multiple users to have personal profiles on a single iPad, allowing individual access to apps and documents. While multi-user support isn’t expected to be ready by the fall release of iOS 9, it could debut later as an update.
9to5Mac’s sources also indicate the larger screened “iPad Pro” is currently being tested, and carries the internal model numbers of “J98” and “J99” representing the Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi + Cellular models of the larger iPad. The sources indicate the larger iPad will debut in late 2015.
