NYT: Apple to Offer Apple Pay Rewards Program

A new report from The New York Times says Apple will introduce enhancements for its Apple Pay mobile payments service at WWDC 2015 next month. The report’s sources claim Apple will be adding a rewards program to Apple Pay.

AppleInsider:

Specific details regarding how the rewards program will work remain sparse at this point. Earlier this month it was rumored that Apple had shown interest in acquiring the failed payment startup Clinkle. Clinkle, which has been mocked and ridiculed from the beginning, is a payment rewards startup.

Apple Pay competitor CurrentC offers support for rewards cards in its mobile payments system, allowing users to add both their debit and rewards cards to the service. Apple’s current offering requires loyalty and rewards cards to be stored in Passbook.

“Apple is preparing to announce details about enhancements to Apple Pay at its software conference next month. Those include a rewards program for the mobile wallet service, said two people briefed on the product.”

The rewards program would likely launch alongside the release of iOS 9, which will be released in the fall, around the time of the expected next-generation iPhone handsets.
