Apple designer and SVP of Design Jony Ive has been promoted to a new position at the company, Chief Design Officer. Ive will oversee a wide array of projects, giving up the day-to-day oversight of industrial design and user interface operations.
As reported on Monday by The Telegraph, Ive’s exact duties have yet to be revealed, however he will retain leadership of hardware and user interface initiative in his new roll. Ive’s new position may include overseeing some aspects of various construction products, such as Apple’s Campus 2 project, as well as construction of upcoming Apple Stores.
Richard Howarth, who played a large role in guiding the iPhone to market from the first prototypes to its debut in 2007, will take over over industrial design duties. Alan Dye, who the report notes was largely responsible for the Apple Watch user interface, will be named head of Apple’s User Interface Design.
Ive will still be in charge of both departments, however he will be freed from day-to-day administrative and management duties, leaving those to Howarth and Dye. Re/code reports Ive will concentrate on current design products, as well as new ideas and future initiatives.
