TechCrunch has uncovered Apple’s acquisition earlier this month of German augmented reality firm Metaio. The firm, which launched in 2003 as a side project at car maker Volkswagen, specializes in augmented reality and computer vision solutions.
When asked by TechCrunch, Apple responded with its standard reply it gives as confirmation of acquisitions, “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.”
The Metaio website says it is no longer taking customers, and a legal document has been uncovered that shows Apple has purchased the firm. The document, posted on Twitter, confirms a transfer of shares of the startup to Apple on May 21st/22nd.
The company has created a tool called Metaio Creator that helps customers author augmented reality products. Shown below is one that was created with Ferrari giving potential buyers an augmented reality tour of the car.
