Earlier this month, we showed you a video documenting a number of attempts to scratch the sapphire crystal display cover used in the stainless steel and Edition Apple Watch models. Today’s video shows similar attempts made against the well being of a Ion-X glass display cover made for the low-end Apple Watch Sport.
The video, from Lewis Hilsenteger of Unbox Therapy, uses Ion-X glass covers sourced from Sonny Dickson, who has acquired parts from various pre-release devices in the past. The glass covers in the video are said to be the same Ion-X covers used in the Apple Watch Sport.
The iOn-X glass is subjected to scratching attempts by a key, knife, steel wool, and various grits of sandpaper, in an attempt to scratch or damage it. (The good stuff starts around 2:30 if you don’t want to wait through the talky portion of the video.)
The video shows the Ion-X glass standing up to the key, knife, and steel wool. However, the sandpaper successfully mars the glass, leaving significant scratches.
What did we learn? I mean besides, “don’t rub sandpaper on your Apple Watch’s screen?” Well, it shows that while the Ion-X glass display cover used in the Apple Watch Sport is indeed durable, and should stand up to most day-to-day wear and tear, the glass proves not to be as durable as the sapphire glass used in Apple’s two more expensive Watches.
The Apple Watch sport is priced at $349, while the stainless steel model is $549, and the Edition model starts at $10,000.
