During his opening comments on Apple’s company earning call on Monday, company CEO Tim Cook announced big-box electronics retailer Best Buy will offer Apple Pay support in its iOS app, as of today. The chain will begin accepting the electronic payments platform in its stores later this year.
Best Buy previously didn’t join the Apple Pay rolls, due to it being a member of the competing “Current-C” mobile payments system. Best Buy confirmed the announcement on both their website, and on Twitter:
It had been announced that Current-C retailers would be barred from accepting mobile payments from other systems, such as Apple Pay, however that policy was quickly clarified, with the CurrentC parent firm announcing the exclusivity agreement would be for “months, not years.”
A number of CurrentC members have eventually begun accepting Apple Pay, including Midwest-based grocery chain Meijer. CurrentC was also a victim of hackers, resulting in trial users having their email information being stolen from the Current C system while it was still in the test stages.
The Best Buy iOS app, which includes support for Apple Pay, is available in the App Store. [DIRECT LINK]
