While NBC wasn’t mentioned in an earlier report today about Apple’s plans to offer a streaming television service, the network still hopes to have a presence on Apple TV later this year via an app that will unfortunately require a verified cable subscription.
… NBC wants to launch Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, and Xbox apps during the second half of this year, following its existing apps for iOS and Android devices. NBC also would like to add new affiliate stations, Nielsen Rating integration, and support for Google’s Chromecast…
Despite the falling out between Apple and NBC parent company Comcast, NBC executives still want an NBC app on Apple’s set-top streaming box. The app would be similar to other content streaming apps that are currently available on the box.
NBC Universal is said to be in negotiations with its local affiliates across the United States, to ensure that cable customers will be able to verify themselves across on the Apple TV app. The app will be designed to allow customers to “tune into local news and syndicated programming” at no additional cost, according to 9to5Mac’s source.
We reported earlier today that Apple is currently looking to have around 25 channels, including CBS, Fox, Disney (including ABC), and other networks ready for a streaming service on Apple TV later this year.
Apple recently signed a deal with HBO to provide the cable network’s HBO Now streaming service to Apple TV users via a monthly subscription. It was also announced that same day that the $99 price of the Apple TV would drop to $69.
