Apple Unveils the All-New 12-inch Retina MacBook – Starts at $1,299

Apple took time at today’s media event to introduce their all-new 12-inch Retina MacBook. The new ultra-slim MacBook weighs in at just 2 pounds, and is 24% thinner than the current MacBook Air at just 13.1mm thick.

“Apple has reinvented the notebook with the new MacBook, and at just two pounds and 13.1 mm, it’s the thinnest and lightest Mac ever,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “Every component of the MacBook reveals a new innovation. From its fanless design, ultra-thin Retina display and full-size keyboard that’s 34 percent thinner, to its all-new Force Touch trackpad, versatile USB-C port and breakthrough terraced battery design, the new MacBook is the future of the notebook.”

The 12-inch MacBook is a separate product from Apple’s current “Air” and “Pro” MacBook lines. The new laptop will be available in three colors, silver, space gray, and of course… gold.

Apple has introduced a redesigned, edge-to-edge keyboard, featuring a new butterfly mechanism for the keys, making them more stable and precise than previous MacBook keyboards. The keyboard offers 17% more surface area.

The 12-inch MacBook’s display is a Retina display, with a 16:10 aspect ratio. The screen is just 0.88mm thick, the thinnest display ever on a Mac. Featuring a larger aperture for each pixel, the new display is extremely efficient, using 30% less energy than existing MacBook displays, while delivering the same brightness. The resolution of the screen is 2304 x 1440.

The new MacBook also boasts an all-new trackpad, the Force Touch trackpad, offering built-in force sensors that allow a user to click anywhere on the trackpad, and also offering Haptic Feedback response. The trackpad is fully customizable, offers Force Click, which is a click followed by a deeper press, which allows tasks such as pulling up a word definition, a map, or even previewing a file.

The logic board inside the new MacBook is 67% smaller than the logic board found in an 11-inch MacBook Air! (Wow, that is just wild!) The 12-inch MacBook pro is also a fanless design, for quieter operation, and features a fifth-generation Intel Core M processor. The Core M will use just 5 watts of power, and the MacBook will boast Intel HD 5300 graphics.

A breakthrough terraced battery design that is layered in individual sheets that are precisely contoured to fit the MacBook’s sleek, curved enclosure. As a result, the new MacBook has 35 percent more battery capacity than would be possible with traditional battery cells and delivers all-day battery life with up to 9 hours of wireless web browsing and up to 10 hours of iTunes movie playback.

The new 12-inch MacBook also sports a single next-generation USB-C port that supports higher wattage charging, USB 3.1 Gen 1 (5Gbps) data transfer and DisplayPort 1.2 all in a single connector that’s one-third the size of a traditional USB port.

The new 12-inch MacBook begins shipping on Friday, April 10, and will be available via the Apple Online Store, Apple Retail stores, and select Apple Authorized Resellers.

Pricing starts at $1,299 for a MacBook that comes with a 1.1 GHz dual-core Intel Core M processor with Turbo Boost speeds up to 2.4 GHz, 8GB of memory, 256GB of flash storage and Intel HD Graphics 5300. The $1,599 model gives you a 1.2 GHz dual-core Intel Core M processor with Turbo Boost speeds up to 2.6GHz, 8GB of memory, 512GB of flash storage and Intel HD Graphics 5300.
