A report on Thursday says smartwatch maker Pebble will soon be introducing a new, thinner smartwatch that will sport a color screen and a new operating system.
Mark Gurman of 9to5Mac says multiple sources tell him that”
“… a major update to both the Pebble’s hardware and software have been in the works and that these changes could be ready to debut next week. The new watch is said to (finally) gain a slightly wider, color, e-paper-like display that will be encased in an overall thinner design. The screen will still not be touch like the Apple Watch…”
Pebble updated its website Thursday morning with the teaser seen above. The official announcement is set for 10AM on Tuesday, February 24.
The watch is said to still boast battery life similar to the current pebble watch, which lasts days on a single charge. The new model is said to include a microphone. While heart-rate sensors are also reportedly on the Pebble roadmap, the company’s limited financial resources are said to be delaying those features for now.
The new hardware will run a new version of the Pebble operating system, said to be redesigned form the ground up, by the team that designed webOS.
We’ve found a new framework to use as an interaction model on the watch,” boasted Pebble CEO Eric Migicovsky earlier this year. He noted that while apps will continue to exist on Pebble, they won’t be the main focus of the platform. “It doesn’t look like what we have today, and it doesn’t look like what’s on your smartphone,” added Migicovsky.
