Popular iOS Media App VLC Makes a Return to the App Store

Users around the web have been reporting the return of the popular media player VLC for iOS to the App Store. The app, which was removed from the store last year, is reportedly appearing as version 2.4.1 update for users who had downloaded the app before its removal.

The version 2.4.2 update, which reportedly includes iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus support, is still showing as unavailable in the App Store, however some users who had previously downloaded the app before it was removed have been able to access the updated version via their purchase histories.

VLC for iOS was removed from the App Store around the time of the iOS 8 launch. No reason was given for the removal, with the developer merely saying it was “working with Apple on a solution.” The developer confirmed in late December that the app would return to the storefront in “early 2015.”

The updated app is reported to include folder support, as well as support for the larger screens found on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus handsets.

The app has had a bit of a turbulent history in the App Store, as it was first removed in 2011 after a licensing dispute, when the original open-source developers of the app claimed that the App Store terms were incompatible with the GNU Public License for the code. The app returned once more in 2013, before disappearing again last September

The app should appear in the App Store for all users shortly.
