The Veta is designed to replace the standard plastic cases that EpiPens are carried and stored in, introducing both Bluetooth and a small assortment of sensors.
The Veta connects to a smartphone via Bluetooth, and uses the device’s data connection to alert family or friends via the accompanying app that the case has been opened, and that the EpiPen has been used.
The Veta case can also issue an audible alert and give instructions to anyone nearby on how to administer an EpiPen shot. The case also can measure any extreme temperature changes in the EpiPen, which might deter the effectiveness of the epinephrine, and alert the user that the EpiPen may need replacing.
While the Veta case doesn’t break any new technological ground, it is an ingenious use of existing technologies in a way that enables a better chance of saving lives in the case of a severe allergy attack.
