If you’ve been holding your breath waiting for Netflix to enable offline viewing on your iOS device, Netflix director of corporate communications and technology Cliff Edwards advises you stop, because it’s “never going to happen.” (MEH! Blue isn’t really your color anyway… – Ed.)
Edwards asserts that offline viewing is a “short term fix” that doesn’t address the bigger issue of sparse public Wi-Fi access. In the next five years, Edwards believes the expansion of public Wi-Fi and cellular coverage will make the idea of offline viewing obsolete. With a ubiquitous Internet connection, customers won’t need to download as they will be able stream all the time.
While Netflix isn’t going to be allowing offline streaming any time soon, we can at least take solace in knowing they’re working on all sorts of original content, with twenty new series planned in the coming years. (My current favorite is “Lilyhammer” starring Stephen Van Zandt.) So, we got that going for us, which is nice.
The company also has plans to move forward with more 4K content, as well as recently adding support for iOS 8, and 1080p HD streaming on the iPhone 6 Plus.
