Apple Takes Dominating 51% Share of Mobile Devices Activated at Christmas

Apple grabbed the lion’s share of new mobile activations during Christmas week, with 51% of all device activations by manufacturer.

AppleInsider:

Apple devices represented a whopping 51.3 percent of activations tracked by mobile analytics firm Flurry, as revealed in new data published on Monday. The stats were collected from Dec. 19 through Christmas Day.

Samsung trailed in a distant second with 17.7% of all activations. Nokia (5.8%), Sony (1.6%), and LG (1.4%) rounded out the top five. The surprise there has to be the Nokia 5.8% number, as their Windows Phone platform traditionally has not performed well, sales-wise.

“While, the holidays in general and Christmas in particular are not the sole indicator of the smartphone market share and trends, it is safe to say that Apple’s newly released iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have had a blockbuster holiday season, despite a lackluster holiday season for the consumer electronics industry,” Flurry Vice President of Analytics and Marketing Jarah Euston noted in a company blog post.

Apple’s iPhone 6 was the top device activated at Christmas, while its big brother, the iPhone 6 Plus also found a place in the top five.

The most popular form factor for Christmas was “Medium Phones,” with 64% of total activations. Full-sized and small-sized tablets both took an 11% piece of the activation pie. 13% of new device activations were phablets compared to just 4% in 2013.

Flurry also saw application installations surging 150% on Christmas Day, as compared to the average number of daily installs from December 1st – 21st.
