It’s been almost two decades since Steve Jobs shutdown production on the Newton MessagePad lineup of portable devices. However, that’s no reason not to compare the device’s handwriting to today’s touchscreen keyboard text entry found on the iPhone. Right?
Newton’s handwriting recognition was way ahead of its time, and the feature was much maligned by users and in the media for its interpretation abilities.
As seen above, the iPhone barely edges out the Newton in terms of speed of text entry, but it should be noted the speed of text entry on the iPhone could likely be increased with the use of a third-party keyboard such as Swype.
