Foxconn’s Innolux division will build a new $2.6 billion factory in Southern Taiwan. The facility will be built exclusively to supply displays to Apple. The move was made following an “urgent” request from the iPhone maker.
The new plant from Foxconn-owned Innolux Corp. will begin mass production of panels exclusively for Apple by the end of 2015, according to a representative for the company who spoke with Bloomberg. Equipment installation is reportedly set to begin next month after Innolux received “an urgent request for exclusive capacity,” the report said.
The company expects to spend $2.6 billion over the next two years building and equipping the factory, which is expected to employ around 2,300 people. The facility will be located in the Kaohsiung Science Park campus in Southern Taiwan.
Not much is known about the arrangement, including the types of displays, or the devices they are being built for, but previous reports have claimed that Innolux had been producing 4.7-inch Retina displays for the iPhone 6.
Innolux is Taiwan’s largest manufacturer of LCD screens.
