It seems the A8 chip found in Apple’s iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus handsets is capable of running 4K video playback. While both device’s screen resolution falls well short of 4K resolution, the A8 is more than up to the task.
4K video playback on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus was first discovered by the developers behind WALTR, a Mac app that’s designed to make it easy to upload and convert any music or video file to an iPad or iPhone for native playback, and reported by TUAW.
The developers of WALTR, a Mac app that allows users to quickly upload video files not supported by iTunes to their iPhone, discovered the capabilities while testing the app.
Although with resolutions of 1334 x 750 and 1920 x 1080, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus won’t be able to display the detail of a 3840 x 2160 4K video, the A8 processor is capable of playing the videos.
4K content file sizes can be huge, so it’s likely iPhone users won’t be making much use of the 4K playback capabilities, however it is still cool to know the little powerhouse in your pocket can display the videos.
