Apple Finalizes HomeKit MFi Hardware Specs, Apple TV Gets HomeKit Support

Apple has published the final HomeKit Made for iPhone (MFi) specifications for hardware developers, opening the door to allow accessory makers to begin building products to integrate into iOS 8’s new framework to control home automation devices.

The finalization of the specs comes just ahead of Apple’s yearly MFi summit, to be held in China, November 12-14. Apple will brief its manufacturing partners on HomeKit and new iOS 8 features in relation to accessories.

Apple’s HomeKit supports a range of products, including lightbulbs, locks, fans, thermostats, power outlets, garage doors, and more. Several partners, including Philips and Honeywell, have already been announced to be participating in the program.

Apple’s final specs include specifications for Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi-connected HomeKit accessories, to securely pair and communicate with Apple’s iOS devices.

The finalization of specs, and the MFi meeting in China indicates a wave of HomeKit-enabled MFi certified products should begin hitting shelves soon.

MacRumors notes that the latest beta of the Apple TV software, released alongside iOS 8.1 beta 2, includes support for HomeKit, allowing HomeKit devices to sync with the Apple TV, possibly giving users a way to control connected devices even when away from home.
