Apple’s Swift Programming Language Gets GM Release for iOS

One notice that got lost in the shuffle of Tuesday’s big announcements was the release of Apple’s Swift programming language as version 1.0. The Swift team posted the happening on their blog on Tuesday.

The Swift “Golden Master” release, for iOS is now available along with the Xcode 6 GM via download from Apple’s Developers Portal. Swift for OS X will hit GM later, as the release of OS X Yosemite grows ever nearer.

“You’ll notice we’re using the word “GM”, not “final”. That’s because Swift will continue to advance with new features, improved performance, and refined syntax. In fact, you can expect a few improvements to come in Xcode 6.1 in time for the Yosemite launch. Because your apps today embed a version of the Swift GM runtime, they will continue to run well into the future.”

Apple announced the Swift programming language, viewed as a long-term replacement for Apple’s Objective-C, back in June at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference 2014. The new language can be used to develop apps for iOS 7, iOS 8, OS X Mavericks, and OS X Yosemite.
