Apple Says iPhone 6 Preorders Set Record Overnight

Overnight demand for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus preorders set records, says an Apple spokesperson. An AT&T spokesperson agreed, saying the demand for the new iPhones is higher than either of the last two years.

Apple and its carrier partners all appear to have sold through on their preorder allotments for the larger iPhone 6 Plus for September 19th delivery. All are reporting delayed shipping times for that model, with Apple showing 3-4 weeks as a shipping time on all carriers.

While an Apple spokesperson told Re/Code that the overnight sales of the iPhone 6 set a new record, the rep wouldn’t say just how many iPhone 6 units were preordered, saying only, “Response to iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus has been incredible with a record number of preorders overnight.”

Users reported technical problems when attempting to order from Apple’s online store for the first few hours, however the store seems to be back online now. U.S. wireless carriers AT&T and Verizon also were reported to have experienced some issues with customers preordering the handsets.

The iPhone 6 is available in 16, 64, and 128 GB capacities in the United States for $199, $299, and $399, respectively, and that’s with a two-year contract. No-contract pricing begins at $649. The iPhone 6 Plus is available in 16, 64, and 128 GB sizes for $299, $399, and $499, respectively, again with a two-year contract. No-contract pricing on the 6 Plus begins at $749.
