A report from a Taiwanese tech blog says Apple’s next-generation iPad Air will have more RAM onboard, with 2GB of RAM. The second-generation Retina iPad mini won’t get any expansion love, and will remain at 1GB of RAM.
The second-generation iPad mini with Retina display will not share in the upgrade and will instead keep a similar configuration to its predecessor, Taiwanese blog TechNews.tw noted. Both tablets currently ship with one gigabyte of RAM.
Apple began offering 1GB of RAM with the introduction of the third-generation iPad, and has kept the same amount of RAM in every full-sized iPad since then.
The memory bump could be required to allow such features as the split-screen apps we’ve reported on previously. That feature is said to work only on the 9.7-inch screen iPads, and work only in landscape view.
While little has leaked out about the next-generation iPad Air, it is expected that the external design will remain close to the current model, but will sport a faster and more efficient A8 processor, a Touch ID fingerprint sensor, and perhaps an improved camera.
