An unknown number of MacBooks were stolen last night in a smash-and-grab theft at the Southpoint Mall Apple Store location in Durham, North Carolina. The MacBook units were on display in the front section of the store.
The Apple Store is part of The Streets at Southpoint, a shopping destination that includes both an indoor mall and an outdoor shopping pavilion. The Apple store is located in an outdoor section of the complex, making it an easier target for an overnight theft. The store is currently closed following the break-in.
Other Apple Stores have been hit by smash-and-grab robberies in recent times. The design of many of the stores include an all glass front in order to showcase the interior of the store, making it inviting for thieves to break the glass – in some cases using a vehicle – grab merchandise, and make their getaway.
Recent smash-and-grab robberies involving Apple Stores include a holiday season robbery in Berlin, and a theft in the Dutch city of Haarlem.
