Facebook has launched a new “Mentions” app that is designed for the exclusive use of “actors, athletes, musicians, and other influencers,” to allow them to “discover and join conversations” on Facebook.
Use of the app is limited to Facebook users who are “verified public figures,” and is designed to let celebrities view what the public is saying about them, and includes tools to allow them to interact with the public and share status updates, photos, and videos. It also allows celebs to host live question and answer sessions directly from their iPhone.
Mentions also displays trending conversations, so celebrities can share their opinion on popular news of the day.
Facebook product managers report that celebrities who have tried the app are using Facebook twice as much as before. Actor Tyrese Gibson reportedly used the app to share the famous video where Dr. Dre bragged about being a billionaire ahead of Apple’s Beats acquisition announcement.
Although Mentions use will be limited to verified public figures for the time being, Facebook does have plans to expand access to the app in the future.
Mentions is available FREE in the App Store for the iPhone. [DIRECT LINK]
