Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is expanding its 8-inch chip plant to increase its Touch ID sensor output for the iPad Air 2 and the iPad mini 3. The company is planning to produce 120 million Touch ID sensors in 2014, a 233% increase since last year. This, from a report by China Times, as found by GforGames.
The report concurs with a previous report from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The report also claims that tin will be used to increase the durability of the sensor module over the current version found in the iPhone 5s.
The new Touch ID units should begin showing up in Apple’s warehouses by early July. All versions of the new Touch ID sensors will support the increased functionality offered by iOS 8’s new SDK, which allows third-party apps to access the fingerprint scanner for security verification.
