Review: ScipherKey – Securely Store Personal Data on Your iPad and iPhone

We all want our personal information and files to be accessible anywhere, and at anytime, but how can we keep that same information secure? iOS device users now have one more option for securely storing their personal information and files on their devices. Introducing ScipherKey.

Overview

ScipherKey acts as a secure repository for personal information such as account logins, bank and credit card information, Wi-Fi passwords and more. It will also store photos, notes, and documents, all held securely inside the ScipherKey vault.

When you start up ScipherKey, it immediately requires you to enter a password. If your password is weak, it will suggest adding additional characters to strengthen your password.

Once you’ve entered a password, the app will ask you a few security questions. If you forget your password, the app will require you to answer the questions to reset your password and regain access to your information.

App developer Shahab Hamidi-Rad claims that ScipherKey creates an encryption key based on your password, and then uses military grade 256-bit AES encryption to encrypt your information.

Once you’re in, you can begin to enter information into the app. Information that can be stored includes info about email accounts, online accounts, credit cards, bank accounts, ID Cards, and Wi-Fi logins.

The app can also securely store files, such as notes, photos, and documents, such as text files and PDF files. Any files attached to emails can be opened in the ScipherKey app and then saved there.

One feature I especially like is the ability to sync your information to other devices, such as an iPad, via Apple’s iOS 7 Multi-Peer Connectivity technology. This technology can directly sync information between two devices without the need for a connection to “cloud storage,” or similar technology. Multi-Peer Connectivity allows a connection between devices without an internet connection.

ScipherKey deals with unauthorized attempts to gain access by allowing you to set the app to temporarily lock out users after a certain amount of attempts. The lock-out time starts at 5 minutes, and increases with additional failed attempts up to 24 hours. The app can also be set to take a photo of any user who fails to login successfully.

Verdict

If you’re not already using a similar app to securely store personal information on your iOS device, I would highly recommend checking out ScipherKey. This app compares well with higher priced alternatives found in the App Store. While it doesn’t boast as many features as some apps of this type, it seems to do the job well when securely storing your information.

Pros:

  • Easy to setup.
  • The app will warn you when it thinks your password isn’t strong enough.
  • It can generate passwords on the fly.
  • Entry of the information is quick and easy.

Cons:

  • No built-in browser, which is basically a standard feature for apps of this type.
  • The security questions to reset your password are fairly garden variety. These could be known to others. Be careful of the security questions you use.
