Google has released VirusTotal Uploader for OS X. The app will allow users to upload suspicious apps and files to VirusTotal to allow the service to scan the file to identify any possible malware.
iMore notes that Google purchased VirusTotal in September 2012, and has produced apps for Windows and Android, but this is the first VirusTotal product to be released on an Apple platform.
Google is looking for Mac users to upload applications from their Macs, thereby expanding the VirusTotal database, giving antivirus developers more information to work with.
From the VirusTotal Blog:
Hopefully this will lead to VirusTotal receiving more Mac applications, diving deeper into an increasingly targeted OS by attackers and allowing antivirus companies and researchers making use of VirusTotal’s backend to build stronger defenses against these threats.
Mac users will simply drag and drop files, folders, and applications into the app to be scanned. “Open With” in Finder can also be sued to scan a file or app. The app will then display the name, scan date, and the number of any malware detections found.
VirusTotal is a free download from Google, and can be downloaded from their website. [DIRECT LINK] The app requires OS X 10.7 or higher.
