Apple Continues to Increase Charitable Donations – Gives $500K to ‘SF Gives’ Anti-Poverty Initiative

Fortune reports that Apple has donated $500,000 to SF Gives, an anti-poverty initiative led by Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff and Tipping Point CEO Daniel Lurie. The initiative is an attempt to get 20 companies to donate $500,000 each in order to create a $10 million pool to fund charitable programs in the San Francisco area.

Fortune, via MacRumors:

The Cupertino, Calif.-based tech giant joins a list of 15 corporate contributors that includes Google, LinkedIn, and Zynga. Launched in early March, SF Gives is the brainchild of Salesforce.com (CRM) CEO Marc Benioff and Daniel Lurie, CEO of the nonprofit Tipping Point.

The arrival of SF Gives comes at a tumultuous time for Silicon Valley. Critics of the tech industry have blamed such companies for a huge rise in rents and increased evictions.

Apple has made a number of notable charitable donations in the past few years. The company’s establishment of a donation matching program for employees has generated $2.6 million, while Apple’s partnership with Product (RED) has led to contributions of $70 million since 2006.
